Sawatdee khrap

Phom chi Matthew khrap
Phom chi Kok Bin khrap

Rau maa jaak SAJC, Singapore!

*
back from Udon Thani, Thailand from 17th - 28th november! reached home like 17hrs ago. hah.

anyway, this trip has been a very fruitful one, with all e laying of bricks (our main job is to lay bricks and make e cement for flooring), hardcore shopping, visiting school/orphanage etc!

took an afternoon flight to Bangkok. at Changi airport, met a group of RJC students who are heading for Laos for OCIP.

took this photo while waiting for my turn to go into the lavatory. nice! my current desktop wallpaper. (:

while on our way to the youth hostel. Glen and Sam were sticking their heads out of the songtel (pronounced liddat), our main form of transport, and made some noises when vehicles went by. then they were laughing at each other's hair. lol!
our dining area. the cook changes the roses once in a few days and the roses are really pretty! got red and champagne roses. and the cook cooked marvellous food! so Mr Koh taught us to say a harn a roy (the food is delicious)

for our bathrooms, it's a communal bath type, meaning we would have to bathe together. but luckily i found a cubicle with a working shower! and we can also use the teachers' bathroom, which has a shower too.

and for toilet wise, we cannot throw the tissue down into the toilet bowl cuz might clog, so we hafta throw into a bin. so it's kinda eww. but we all were okay with it. yar.

our envelopes. during the trip, we played Angel and Mortal. my angel is Fadilah and mortal is Minqi. the funny part about the game is when Sam kept saying Yunlu is his angel (which is true) and Yuwen asked Sam why he didnt write letter to her (cuz he's her angel) and Glen's angel is Yuwen. hah. and Kok Bin & Jia Hui are each other's angel and mortal.

the boot on the left is Sam's boot and the one on e left is Glen's. during the trip, they gay-ed around very much (and danced very well) and one of the construction workers, Bomb, joined in. Kok Bin said it's Bomb's way to show friendliness. but it's very eeeeee. and he likes Ms Lee. hha!

cement! Chay (pronounced as Chai) kept saying more cement/make cement while building the second house (we split up into two groups to build 2 houses for the first 3.5 working days). and mind you, 1 bag of cement is already 50kg! then still need to add in 12 buckets of sand and 5 buckets of water! ohmann.

this is e tumbler that Swensens served the ice water in. very nice! and the Swensens in Thailand only serve ice-cream. took this photo while we were at the shopping centre that housed Big C, after our welcome dinner at some buffet restaurant, where i saw this overweight guy who wore makeup and spoke in a girly voice. ohmann!

the 5 guys + Yuwen + Yunlu + Andrea bought pillows from Big C (5 Sing dollars) and said they'll donate the pillows to the youth hostel after our stay. lol!

saw this at the flea market on day3. e 5 of us (Glen Sam Andrea Cheryl me) went to the flea market earlier cuz we cant go to the HIV orphanage. we were supposed to interact with local villagers, but turned out that Tasani (a Habitat for Humanity staff) were collecting payments for the houses, so we ended up sleeping in the van for like 2hours.

at the flea market, we saw this person wearing pink dress, with sorta pointed boobs (we suspected this person didnt wear bra) and has a MOUSTACHE!!! and we saw another man, sitting on a small board with wheels, and he has a very big head and wears makeup (his cheeks are damn rosy). ohmann!

to that, i started saying that Thailand is a land of ambiguity. it's easy to mistake guys as girls and vice versa. but more of guys dressed as girls bah. =x

that's our team tshirt and that's e uber big lighter that Sam bought at the flea market.

went to the Thai-Laos friendship bridge after lunch and shopping at the flea market. met this group of French tourists (see above) and we had quite some chat. and it's really hot walking on the bridge! but the view is rather pretty. and there's signs to stop people from crossing the bridge from one end to the other end.

that's Sam-Bomb-Glen gaying in action. sometimes Bomb will call for Kok Bin, but mainly is Sam. and after some days i find Sam to resemble Bomb! omg.

that's the design that Gloria had came up with. Crossing borders, touching lives. meaningful! (:

that's e cement for flooring. 1 bag of cement, 12 buckets of sand, 20 buckets of gravel and 10 buckets of water. and i like the sound of shovelling the cement down into the bucket (as in when the gravel hit the bucket), and Jeslyn said she like doing the job of digging cement. hah!

a dog at the worksite which we said that the hair resembles Matthew's (he said his hair is dead) and dunno who said that the dog's hair is better in texture than Matthew's. haha!

and Matthew came up with the quote of the trip: Cement work wonders. haha!

and the guy in the picture is Chay.

in jamming studio at the hostel. Glen's singing Pokemon theme song. he and Sam even came up with the actions!

and Sam can play the guitar well! he knows how to play the Canon in D remix version on electric guitar! ohmann.

Thai masseuse! they came over on Tuesday, day 5. and they're really good! and some of them know how to speak Chinese! cool! (:

and on the first few days of the trip, we played bridge rather excessively, and some learned how to play over there. and the boys are really good at bridge lo! eeks. through bridge, i discovered Matthew's pet phrase: that's the way man. haha!

on day 6. they are in my group and they dug the hole for septic tank (aka shithole) for the second house. Shawn is the experienced digger who seems to love digging out huge rocks and Tony calls himself level 6 mixer (me and Tony came up with really much random stuff about levels and everything. lol!)

worked half day and then headed for Don Bosco school, which i heard is equivalent to ACS of Singapore. omg. and it's quite true, considering that they have air-conditioned classrooms, THREE swimming pools and even LCD display panel, which they displayed welcome message for us!
ohmann! and they have their own school bag! but then again, considering that they take in students from 6years old to 18years old, it's quite alright to have 3 swimming pools bah. lol! after walking to some parts of the school, we returned to the hall for performance.

Matthew and Kok Bin are the emcees, with the principal as the translator. the first few Thai phrases at the beginning of this entry is the starting phrases of their script, which Glen and Sam kept saying after the school trip. and slowly, all of us kept saying it, and called Matthew and Kok Bin as Matthew khrap and Kok Bin khrap.

we also discovered Matthew not pronouncing words properly. like sweet is being pronounced as schweet, or shit. hah!

anyway the translation are as follows:

Hello! (for guys the ending tone is khrap and for girls is kha)

My name is Matthew.
My name is Kok Bin

We are from SAJC, Singapore!

then we displayed the Chinese costume (by Yu Zhen), then Chinese dance, then Malay costumes (by Fadilah and Sam), Malay dance, Indian costumes (Tony and Jia Hui), Indian dance (chori chori!), SAJC uniforms (Jeslyn and Glen) + stickman tee (Su Hui) + Halo tee (Ee Ling) + No one is here by chance tee (Hui Juan) + cotton pe tee (Gloria) + dry fit pe tee (me) + Team SAJC tee (Pamela) and then chicken dance! lol. the sound system sorta cocked up before we can play the music for the Malay dance. LG player died on us! ohmann. but luckily got another player. phew.

after our performance, had food fest. then they did a dance for us, and gave us some Thai food to try. Bomb gave Ms Lee a heart-shaped piece of food! hah.

then some of the students did some sort of mass dance.

and the steps are quite catchy. hah. then got changed to play basketball!

had two girls match and two guys match that lasted for 5mins for each match. above is the first match teams. but the girls are basketball players! so naturally they played really well, but they didnt mark us so that we can play bah. so nice! and i went to play for the second game and i ran like crazy. argh.

the first match's guys teams. the second guy from the left standing up had caught e attention of some of the girls. but he's taken. hah. then i find the second guy from the left squatting down to be really pro at playing basketball. and he can thunder the ball across the court! ou xiang! haha.

took photos with the girls! the girl on Yun Lu's right is Fire, who is the emcee at the starting of the whole show earlier on. and i think Glen is smitten with her or something, cuz later he and Sam took photo with her (Sam got girlfriend le). hah!

found out that she came to Singapore in March for holiday and she likes our country! the amazing thing is that she knew how to ride a motorcycle and she's only SIXTEEN! argh. and she said something like she's not in the basketball team, and she shot rather well! ohmann.

and we girls concluded that the Thai girls are pretty. lol.

after visiting the school, went to Charoensri shopping complex, which Mr Koh said is the equivalent of Orchard Road in Udon Thani, for some shopping. some of the girls went really all out to shop within that few hours, not knowing we would go back there again. haha! ate shabu shabu with the guys + Wan Lin + Yuwen + Yunlu + Cheryl.

on day 7, we went to work on the third house as one whole group. then got a guy who's a friend of the construction workers going over to help out. he's damn zai lar. while i'm trying to do one brick, he would like done with 4-5 bricks already?! so while doing that wall, i was just filling the cement into the holes that need cement.

the kid above is the child of the guy. initially he's quite dao, but after i took out a rubberband to bind some of the red bricks together, he likes it and started smiling. so cute!! haha. then Chay told me to babysit him for a while (his name is Dan if i'm not wrong).

while on e way back to the hostel, there's a lizard on the songtel and the guys are like squealing. Shawn wanted to remove it, but Glen n Sam thought he's gonna throw at them or something and kicked him away. in the end, Yu Zhen went over to throw the lizard out, but the tail remained. so Cheryl went over and tried to throw it out, but the two guys thought she's gonna throw at them, and did some stuff that resulted in the tail dropping onto the seat and the 2 of them did some funny stuff. no wonder they are our permanent entertainers. hah!

this is a cement cake made on day 8, by Kok Bin who was resting due to injury to foot. it's for Ms Lee, whose birthday is today! haha. n e guys said that it stank, probably bcuz of the grass. but they aired it on day 11.

on the pile of sand before we started on flooring.

our dirty gloves after flooring! we finished the third house on day 8, which is 2 days ahead of the originial schedule! so we get to shop and play for the next few days! hah.

the third house. i did the wall on the left facing the front on a scaffold and it's fun! haha.

on day 9, we did OCIP Annual Star Awards voting in the morning, then lunch at the field outside the Habitat for Humanity office, before going over to the Charoensri shopping complex for hardcore shopping. even me bought a lot of stuff lar! lol. and on that day, a Thai popstar dropped by for a roadshow in the shopping complex. not that good looking. hah.

at the shopping complex, i saw this guy in pink jacket and tshirt and he has CREW CUT hair! ohmann. shopped from afternoon till after dinner. then we headed for the nearby night market where we bought more stuff.

that day we discovered 2 hardcore shoppers. one of them bought 5 pairs of shoes and the other bought 14-16 tees. and they both brought extra bags to hold their shopping stuff. lol.

above is the picture when the guys need to push the songtel cuz the engine cant start on day 10. did once a few days earlier. poor guys. haha. went to a mountain and e dinosaur trail nearby. the sky is really beautiful!

a soccer ball in a dinosaur's mouth?! and there are dinosaurs sounds around!

evolution of monkeys to human. hah!

before setting off to the Nong Prajak Public Park.

after spending a few hours at the park, headed back to the hostel.

and the thing about Thailand that the skies darken very early, like 6pm Thailand time.

went to an orchid farm next morning.

Yuwen and Yunlu are singing to the plant that dances when music is played. and they sang songs like Father Abraham. lol.

this is the shirt that 5 of the guys wore.

after the orchid farm went to the 3 houses for House Dedication ceremonies. on the second house, we signed our names on a wall that faced the outside.

then headed for Charoensri shopping complex again cuz some need to buy souvenirs. bought some stuff and then settled down at Swensens. and i like Auntie Anne's 's pretzels! nice.

after Charoensri went to some silk place, but the place is closed, so we shopped for like 45mins for some silk stuff. then headed for Big C cuz some wanna get earrings. lol. then headed back to hostel to put the stuff down and then went to some fancy restaurant for farewell dinner.

after makaning is e karaoke session. discovered that Kok Bin seems to like singing. hahaha. made e guys in the 2 rumoured couples to present flowers to the girls. got Ms Lee to present a pair of sunglasses to Bomb! haha.

sang a lot of songs (e workers oso sang some songs) and we ended off with school song. yeah!

and the Thais (homeowners, e workers and e Habitat for Humanity staff) tied some strings on our wrists as a form of well-wishes. and we stayed out till pretty late that night.

that night announced the results for the OCIP Annual Star Awards:

Most Humourous: Sam
Most Cheerful: Yuwen
Most Encouraging: Wan Lin

Yunlu and Yuwen: Mad & Madder

the cook baked us some brownies e next morning and we celebrated Ms Lee's birthday in advance! bought a Habitat for Humanity tshirt too!

the dog at the hostel!

set off for Udon Thani International Airport at around 12pm. took this photo along the way. waited at airport in Bangkok for like a couple of hours before we finally boarded the plane back to Singapore. and the night view is really beautiful!

on another note, whenever i looked up at the clear blue sky in Thailand, a song will come into my mind:

got another song that i heard while on the van.

Gabrielle - Out of Reach

Knew the signs
Wasn't right
I was stupid for a while
Swept away by you
And now I feel like a fool

So confused
My heart's bruised
Was I ever loved by you

Out of reach, so far
I never had your heart
Out of reach, couldn't see
We were never meant to be

Catch myself
From despair
I could drown
If I stay here
Keeping busy everyday
I know I will be okay

But I was
So confused
My heart's bruised
Was I ever loved by you

Out of reach, so far
I never had your heart
Out of reach, couldn't see
We were never meant to be

So much hurt
So much pain
Takes a while to regain
What is lost, inside
And I hope that in time
You'll be out of my mind
And I'll be over you< But now I'm
So confused
My heart's bruised
Was I ever loved by you

Out of reach, so far
I never had your heart
Out of reach, couldn't see
We were never meant to be

Out of reach, so far
You never gave your heart
In my reach, I can see
There's a life out there for me

very meaningful. yup.

to be honest, i dun exactly feel homesick during the trip. i'm just not accustomed to not being able to send out messages bah. it's like, i'm okay with the life in Thailand. no internet was fine.

through this trip, i can fully understand peijun's message to me in her blog. i am friends to people, but i'm always the one being left out. sorry for not being there, even though i'm the one who wanted to go otc in the first place. and i'm the one who got distracted by other things along the way. n not being able to do critical thinking. that just makes me a failure isn't it.

after getting back to Singapore, reality kicked in again. it made Thailand seems to be a temporary refuge for me from all the stuff in Singapore. things happened, and i hafta do something. if not you would be gone.

i need to get back to the me before the trip
